Finalists named for 2013-14 Baltimore County Teacher of the Year: Winner to be announced during May 6 ceremony

TOWSON, MD. – Five Baltimore County Public Schools educators have been named finalists for the school system’s annual Teacher of the Year award for 2013-2014. “Our Teacher of the Year program allows us to celebrate the teaching profession and the high quality of educators employed by Baltimore County Public Schools,” said Superintendent Dr. S. Dallas Dance. “The five teachers named finalists this year represent diverse subject areas and levels of instruction, but they share an extraordinary commitment to the academic and personal success of their students. In honoring these five finalists, we hope to bring positive attention to all 8,800 BCPS teachers and the work they do each day to ensure that we graduate globally competitive young men and women.” The finalists are:
  • Andrea Bissell, a mathematics teacher at Chesapeake High School in Essex
  • Lynn Detter, a Grade 4 teacher at Riderwood Elementary School in Towson
  • Cara Detwiler, a Grade 4 teacher at Johnnycake Elementary School in Woodlawn
  • Sean McComb, an English teacher and AVID coordinator at Patapsco High School & Center for the Arts in Dundalk
  • Kay Soonfah-Senior, a Spanish teacher at Cockeysville Middle School in Cockeysville
From among the five finalists, one outstanding educator will be named Baltimore County’s Teacher of the Year during a 4:30 p.m. ceremony at George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology, 938 York Road, Towson. The ceremony, which will feature student performances and remarks from 2012-2013 Baltimore County Teacher of the Year Angela Rountree, will honor all 115 nominees and their schools. Also this year, Baltimore County Public Schools will announce a Principal of the Year during the May 6 ceremony. The Teacher of the Year finalists were selected by a panel of judges from across Baltimore County and representing principals, teachers, students, administrators and the teacher’s union. The Teacher of the Year will go on to participate in the state Teacher of the Year program, including recognition from the State Board of Education on May 21.
