TOWSON, MD — The annual summer episode of “Parent University” – featuring a variety of seasonal activities to keep youngsters engaged and learning – is now airing on Comcast Cable Channel 73 and Verizon FiOS Channel 34 in Baltimore County. The show, hosted by Sue Hahn of BCPS’ Parent University, focuses on keeping students busy and active during the long, lazy, and hot days of summer. In the episode, Hahn takes viewers on excursions to Glenn L. Martin Aviation Museum in Middle River, the Marshy Point Nature Center in Chase, and the Agriculture Center in Hunt Valley, as well as to local branches of the Baltimore County Public Library. “Summer can be a tough time to find things to do that are both fun and educational,” says Hahn, a specialist in the school system’s Office of Family and Community Engagement. “But there are many opportunities across Baltimore County and the region for both having summertime fun and learning a little bit about our region, our history, our culture, and our people. The important thing is to get out there and explore what our county has to offer.” Parent University is a BCPS program that supports parents and caregivers through in-person workshops, online resources, and videos that meet unique educational needs of students and their families. The “Parent University” Summer Edition can be found on the Parent University home page at www.bcps.org/parentu/ or www.bcps.org/bcpstv/video.html?Program=PU&VideoID=853. During the school year, BCPS-TV, the school system’s television station, produces a new episode of “Parent University” every two weeks. Earlier episodes of the show are available at www.bcps.org/bcpstv/programs and https://vimeo.com/bcps. Since 1983, BCPS-TV has produced original and instructional programming, interactive DVDs, commercial satellite downlinks, and live telecasts to serve the informational needs of students, parents, educators, and citizens of Baltimore County. The television station also provides opportunities for BCPS students, staff, and stakeholders to learn about and gain experience in television and video production. Original programs airing on the television station include “High School Sports Scene,” “Math Homework Helpers,” “Kid Conversation,” “Parent University,” “Student Art Break,” “Student Production Showcase,” “Brain Gain,” “Up Beat,” and “The Chalkboard.” BCPS-TV also records and airs systemwide music and recognition events as well as recorded and live-stream broadcasts of the public meetings of the Baltimore County Board of Education. TOWSON, MD. – The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced today that Chengrui Fu, who graduated from Towson High School in June, is among the last group of high school seniors who have been awarded 2016 National Merit Scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities. Fu is a Lutherville resident who plans to study computer science at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. College-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship. The National Merit Scholarship Program was established in 1955 to honor scholastically-talented American youth. It is conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance. More than 7,300 National Merit Scholar Finalists have won National Merit Scholarship Awards worth approximately $33 million. In addition to the just-announced college-sponsored scholarships, earlier this spring, a first group of college-sponsored scholarships was announced as well as corporate-sponsored scholarships and National Merit® $2,500 Scholarships. About 1.5 million juniors in some 22,000 high schools entered the 2016 National Merit Scholarship competition when they took the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. Last fall, 16,000 Semifinalists were designated on a state representational basis. From the Semifinalist group, 15,000 met Finalist requirements, and half will receive Merit Scholarships.

What: Baltimore County Public Schools will host a half-day “Early Entry Day" for rising Grades 6 and 9 students for the 2016–2017 school year. Students will start their day in period one and continue through their entire class schedule, including lunch. Students also will have the opportunity to engage in various activities designed to acclimate them to their new school environments; such as visiting their lockers, taking school tours, and meeting teachers and school counselors. Transportation will be provided for those students who will take buses to middle and high school. Those students will be picked up at their assigned bus stops at their regular scheduled times and will be transported home at the end of the half-day schedule. A complimentary lunch will be served to all participating students, and students will be able to add funds to their cafeteria accounts in preparation for the first day of school on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2016. When: Monday, Aug. 22, 2016, half-day morning schedule (specific times determined based on schools’ start times) Where: All middle and high schools in Baltimore County Public SchoolsBackground: The Early Entry Day is for students only and will not replace other school-based student-parent orientation activities such as Sneak-a-Peak, evening student-parent orientation, or Back-to-School Night. More detailed information regarding the Early Entry Day, such as specific bus stops, exact hours of the morning half-day, student schedules, and school-based agendas for the day will be included in each school’s “Welcome Back" correspondence in early August 2016. Current research and best practices on student transitions from elementary to middle and middle to high school indicate that students experience a broad array of socio-emotional and academic concerns as they enter into these transitions. Student transitions are much more efficient and effective when students are given an opportunity to meet their teachers, walk throughout the school building, visit their lockers, visit the cafeteria, and begin meeting their new classmates in an environment that is exclusive to them. By limiting Early Entry Day to only transitioning students, these students are provided an opportunity to build community and familiarity with school staff and new classmates.

TOWSON, MD — Open Door did it again! The before- and after-school care provider has contributed $10,000 in school supplies – as it did last year – to the Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools. The contribution was given to support the school system’s Back to School Involves You, Too! campaign to secure school supplies for needy families. Every year, some families struggle to provide their children with needed school supplies, and often, teachers use their own funds to fill in the gaps. The campaign was created to engage the community in ensuring that all children receive the supplies they need to get the school year off to a good start. Open Door provides before- and after-school services in 18 Baltimore County elementary schools as well as in Anne Arundel, Carroll, and Harford counties. “Open Door’s mission continues to be to support working families with children in Baltimore County Public Schools,” said Jeanne Marie Murphy, Open Door’s founder and executive director. “We are pleased to participate in the Back to School Initiative and appreciate our partnership with BCPS.” Deborah Phelps, director of the Education Foundation, praised Open Door for its leadership. “The school system’s annual school supply campaign is just in its second year,” Phelps noted. “Open Door’s generous gift establishes a strong foundation for us to build on and brings attention to the growing opportunities for corporate and community support of our students and schools.” In addition to collecting school supplies, the school system’s Back to School Involves You, Too! campaign features back to school festivals, special contests, BCPS-TV programming, Parent University workshops, and more. For information about the campaign as well as a calendar of this year’s activities and events, go to www.bcps.org/teamBCPS/btsiyt/.
