Lansdowne, Overlea Academy of Finance programs honored nationally
TOWSON, MD – The Academy of Finance programs at Lansdowne and Overlea high schools both reached Model status in the annual Academy Assessment by NAF. As Model academies, the programs will be highlighted at the NAF national conference, NAF Next, which will be held in July in Orlando, Fla.
In her letter to BCPS Superintendent Dr. S. Dallas Dance, NAF President JD Hoye described the Academy of Finance programs at Lansdowne and Overlea as “shining examples of what can be accomplished when districts and schools move to a culture of linking education and business to benefit students.”
Academy of Finance programs prepare students for success in college and careers by bolstering STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) industry-specific curricula with work-based learning experiences, including paid internships. During the 2015-16 school year nearly 89,000 students attended 716 NAF academies across 36 states, including D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In 2015, NAF academies reported 98% of seniors graduated with 92% of graduates planning to go to college.
For both Lansdowne and Overlea’s Academies of Finance, Erik Grooms serves as the program director and Allan Sanders of Weil, Akman, Baylin & Coleman is the advisory board chair. At Lansdowne, the site coordinator is Mike Martin and principal is Ken Miller. At Overlea, Mudiwa Johnson is the site coordinator and Dr. Marquis Dwarte is the principal.
At the NAF Next conference, where the Academies of Finance will be honored, a BCPS graduate will be honored with one of three national AOF Alumni Awards. The honoree, Chantee Steele, graduated from Lansdowne High School and its AOF in 2008. The financial planning courses that Steele took at the Community College of Baltimore County, along with the job shadow days and her junior year internship at PNC Bank as a bank teller, allowed Steele to gain a competitive edge over her high school peers. Steele graduated as salutatorian of her high school class and continued her education at Drexel University, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a 3.8 GPA. Prior to her graduation, Steele secured a full-time position at Deloitte, within the advisory function. She became a certified public accountant (CPA) in May 2015.

TOWSON, MD — Baltimore County Public Schools is accepting nominations for BCPS high school students to become members of the 2016 – 2017 Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council.

It also is a useful forum for diverse students from across this large county to get to know each other and to learn more about others’ educational experiences.”
Nomination forms are due by 4:45 p.m. on Friday, June 17, and available on the BCPS website (www.bcps.org) by clicking a link under the “What’s Happening” section on the home page. BCPS student’s artwork part of national exhibit : Art by Towson High student Grace Sheridan is included
TOWSON, MD — Artwork from students who are members of the National Art Honor Society and National Junior Art Honor Society – including Grace Sheridan of Towson High School -- is on exhibit through Aug. 31 at the headquarters of the National Art Education Association, located in Old Town Alexandria, VA.
Art by Sheridan, a Grade 10 student and National Art Honor Society member, will be on display along with that of students from 15 other high schools around the nation. Sheridan’s work is the only work of a Maryland student included in the exhibit.
The exhibit will be seen by visual arts education professionals, creative leaders, and students from across the country who will be gathering at the National Art Education Association’s headquarters for meetings and events this summer. The artwork exhibited has been selected by art educators who are members of the National Art Education Association and who sponsor National Art Honor Society or National Junior Art Honor Society chapters at their schools.
In 1978, the National Art Education Association began the National Art Honor Society program to inspire and recognize students who demonstrate outstanding achievement and interest in the visual arts. Currently, 50,000+ students are National Art Honor Society or National Junior Art Honor Society members worldwide. The honor societies support educators and their students in attaining the highest standards in art scholarship, character, and service, as well as help bring public awareness to the essential value of art education in the 21st century.

AVID tutor at Franklin High School named Team BCPS Volunteer of the Year: Brian Kim among five finalists honored at gala ceremony
TOWSON, MD — Selecting a Team BCPS Volunteer of the Year is no easy task. In the running were 65 dedicated volunteers being honored at Valley Mansion in Cockeysville Monday morning. Together they contributed 19,000 hours of service to BCPS schools and students.
But Brian Kim, a second-year volunteer at Franklin High School who works with the school’s AVID students, stood out. Not only had he put in more than 2,000 hours assisting students in the Advancement Via Individual Determination program, he even attends some of his AVID students’ classes to better learn the content they must master.
For his efforts, Kim was named the third annual Team BCPS Volunteer of the Year with the award coming during the gala breakfast for the superlative volunteers. Each volunteer was recognized for his or her support of teachers and students, said Nick Burton-Prateley, president of the Baltimore County Student Councils and a 2016 Hereford High graduate.
“You have done so much more than just show up,” Burton-Prateley said. “You have supported teachers, nurtured students, shared your knowledge and talents, raised funds, and inspired others to get involved. You have assisted in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, offices, nurses’ suites and more. You have helped our students succeed in their school work, on athletic fields, in robotics competitions and on stage.”
BCPS Superintendent Dr. S. Dallas Dance agreed, commending the volunteers for their dedication and service. “I cannot stress how important you are to the success of our students,” he said. “You are part of the thread of our schools. Everything you do for us strengthens the fabric that surrounds and supports our students.”
Kim, who helps students with everything from homework to completing college essays, expressed appreciation to Franklin High School and his co-workers there.
The other four Volunteer of the Year finalists are:
- Laura Frasca, volunteer at Norwood Elementary School in Dundalk.
- Cheryl Herb, a volunteer at both Bedford Elementary and Campfield Early Learning Center in Pikesville.
- Diane Knight, a volunteer at Powhatan Elementary School in Woodlawn.
- Kevin Rhock, a volunteer at Sandalwood Elementary School in Essex.

Pikesville High student named one of only 39 national 2016 Hamilton Scholars
TOWSON, MD — Tinbit Berhanu, a Grade 11 student at Pikesville High School, has been named one of only 39 national 2016 Hamilton Scholars.
Each year, Alexander Hamilton Scholars selects up to 40 high school juniors to join its program. The students are selected based on financial need, demonstrated academic excellence, commitment to service, and leadership potential. As scholars, they engage in a 5-year program designed to support their success in college and careers.
Berhanu moved to the U.S. when she was 14 years old. Despite the fact that speaking English was discouraged in her country, she had already begun teaching herself English using a dictionary and other books. Now, she says, people cannot believe that she has only been in the U.S. for a few years. According to her profile on the Alexander Hamilton Scholars website: “She is a part of National Honors Society, the cross country team, Mock Trial team, Medical Club, Students of Success Club, and has been the co-editor and saleswoman of a literary magazine in her school for two consecutive years. Tinbit also loves using her organizational skills to assist with setting up events in her church.”
As a Hamilton Scholar, for the next five years, Berhanu will participate in conference calls and receive coaching support throughout the school year, and each summer, she will attend a weeklong national leadership institute and be eligible to apply for paid internships at the New York Historical Society, Morgan Stanley, and the Hamilton Scholars’ headquarters.
The program has seen 100% of its scholars be accepted into academically selective colleges, and 98% of them graduate from college in 5 years or less. In the past six years, Alexander Hamilton Scholars has had seven Gates Millennium Scholars, 15 Coca-Cola Scholars, and 24 QuestBridge Finalists. More about the program can be found at http://hamiltonscholars.org/1/.
