Eastern Tech students’ creation of prosthetic leg earns finalist spot in national contest: Pair is one of four final “Incredible Bionic Challenge” teams
TOWSON, MD. – A lifelike, fully-functional leg fashioned out of household items has earned Eastern Technical High School students Shannon Austin and Sharmaine Dyson a spot as one of four national finalists in the Smithsonian Institution’s “Incredible Bionic Man Challenge.”
The pair will travel to Washington, D.C., on Thursday, December 12, for a 2 p.m. awards ceremony and the announcement of the competition’s grand prize winner of a $5,000 college scholarship. The ceremony will be broadcast live on the Smithsonian’s website from the Museum of National History’s new Q?rius Theater.
Along with teacher and coach Jamie Bereska, the students – both of whom are enrolled in Eastern’s Allied Health program – created the realistic leg and foot using modeling clay, dowels, straw, popsicle sticks, Styrofoam, glue, twine, toothpicks, and fake toenails. The lower leg and foot they created has dorsal flexion (meaning it can lean back on the heel), plantar flexion (meaning it can lean forward on the ball of the foot) and moveable toes.
“Both students completed the competition on their own initiative and time. The editing and submitting of the video was done here at the school,” said Bereska, a science teacher at Eastern who introduced students to the competition after hearing about it from fellow science teacher Thomas Michocki. “Overall, they did an excellent job on creating a very realistic bionic foot with attached calf.”
In a two-minute video that served as the duo’s entry into the contest, the students demonstrate the utility of prosthetic devices to assist people with diabetes or others who have lost lower legs to disease or injury. They also discuss the prevalence of diabetes in the United States and the role it plays in losing limbs.
Sponsored by the Smithsonian Channel and inspired by the channel’s documentary, “The Incredible Bionic Man,” the competition challenged students to build an artificial body part – a hand, foot, heart, kidney, lung, or ear – from common household items and create a video that shows the body part in action.
The finalists’ videos may be viewed at http://www.incrediblebionicmanchallenge.com/cablevision/. The awards ceremony (2 p.m. on Thursday, December 12) will be available for live-stream viewing at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/the-incredible-bionic-man-demo-and-contest-award-ceremony.

BCPS graduate named one of two Maryland AP Scholars of the Year: Lisa Ann Tang took 16 AP tests at Dulaney; scored a 5 in every one
TOWSON, MD. – Dulaney High School 2013 graduate Lisa Ann Tang has been named the female Maryland AP Scholar of the Year for her impressive participation in Advanced Placement classes and performance on AP tests.
At Dulaney, Tang took a total of 16 AP tests and earned a top score – a 5 – in every test.
AP final exam scores are reported on a scale of 1–5, with scores of 3 or higher generally allowing students to quality for credit or advanced placement in colleges and universities. Only 14.3 percent of the 3.9 million AP exams taken last spring earned a 5.
“Lisa Ann is a model for all who seek to excel, in whatever endeavors they pursue,” said BCPS Superintendent Dr. Dallas Dance. “Her determination, hard work and intellect are a potent recipe for success. We are so proud of her and look forward to learning about her future achievements.”
“Lisa Ann was not only an outstanding student at Dulaney, she was also an energetic leader,” said Dulaney Principal Lynda Whitlock. “She had a ready smile and was very involved in making Dulaney a great place to learn and grow.”
Earlier this year, Tang’s physics teacher, Pete Sykes, said of her: “In my years of teaching, she definitely is one of the most intelligent, well-rounded and hardest working students I’ve come across. Lisa Ann is deserving of any accolades that may come her way, for her grace and presence as much as for her academic achievements. She is a unique and special young woman who has a bright future. “
Tang is currently in her first year at Yale University. Last January, she was one of just 11 students from Maryland named among 300 students nationwide as semifinalists in the Intel Science Talent Search. At Dulaney, she was a member of the Key Club and debate team. In addition, she was a violinist with the Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestra. She came within 10 points of earning perfect scores on each section of the SAT.
