BCPS to host 3rd annual systemwide Chess Championship: 176 students registered to date

What: Baltimore County Public Schools will host its third annual systemwide Chess Championship. To date, 176 students have registered to participate from Carney, Cromwell, Essex, Fifth District, Joppa View, Orems, Powhatan, Sandy Plains, Sparks, Stoneleigh, Timonium and Wellwood International elementary schools; Arbutus, Catonsville, Cockeysville, Crossroads, Dumbarton, Hereford, Lansdowne, Loch Raven, Parkville, Ridgely, Sparrows Point and Stemmers Run middle schools; and Catonsville, Chesapeake, Crossroads, Dulaney, Dundalk, Eastern Technical, Hereford, Loch Raven, Milford Mill, Owings Mills, Parkville, Pikesville, Towson, Western School of Technology and Woodlawn high schools. When: Saturday, April 27, 2013, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Registration at 8 a.m. with first round beginning at 9:15 a.m.; awards presentations between 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.Where: Cockeysville Middle School 10401 Greenside Drive Cockeysville, MD 21030Background: Schools can enter teams of any size from one to five members in the county’s chess tournament. With three tournament divisions -- elementary, middle and high school – trophies will be presented to the top three teams , top eight individuals, and top two unrated players in each division. The reigning county champions from 2012 competition are Essex Elementary, Cockeysville Middle and Dulaney High schools. Only players and officials will be allowed in the tournament area during play; all others will remain in a waiting area.
