TOWSON, MD. – Trey Wooten, a senior at Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts and a culinary arts student at Sollers Point Technical High School, was on the three-person team that created the winning ice cream at this year’s TIC Gums Ice Cream University.
Wooten and his teammates, students from Fallston and Bel Air high schools, created Farmer’s Flight, a mixed berry, green tea ice cream with honey crunches. The special flavor will be produced by the students and sold in the coming weeks at Broom’s Bloom Dairy located in Harford County.
Each year, TIC Gums invites high school students interested in science, culinary arts, and marketing to participate in Ice Cream University, which is modeled after Cornell University’s Food Science 101 course. This year, 16 students participated. TIC Gums sponsored each student’s $500 program fee and provided home ice cream makers upon program completion.
Tim Andon, business development manager at TIC Gums and Cornell alumnus, led the five week course. “Year-over-year, this program has meant so much to TIC Gums and our mission to educate the public about food science. We want to make kids excited about the food industry and inspire them to ask more questions and discover a potentially unknown passion,” said Andon.
The program featured three areas of focus. The first weeks of study were dedicated to scientific principles, such as emulsions, overrun calculation, ice crystal formation, and statistical know-how for tracking and maintaining quality. The attention then turned to flavor selection and inclusions, like nuts, chocolate, or fruit. Finally, the students shifted focus to finalizing the product packaging and marketing. During the last session, students presented their flavor and branding to the judges.

Glyndon, Warren elementary schools named 2018 National Schools of Character: Only 73 schools in nation received this designation
TOWSON, MD. – Glyndon and Warren elementary schools in Baltimore County have been named 2018 National Schools of Character by Character.org.
This year, Character.org designated 73 schools as 2018 National Schools of Character and 5 districts as 2018 National Districts of Character. Schools are selected based on their dedicated focus on character development programs and a positive impact on academic achievement, student behavior, school climate and their communities. Criteria for selection are based on Character.org’s 11 Principles of Effective Character Education, a framework to assist schools in providing students with opportunities for moral action, fostering shared leadership, and engaging families and communities as partners in the character-building effort.
Glyndon and Warren elementary schools and the other 2018 National Schools of Character will be honored at the 25th National Forum on Character to be held Oct. 4-7, 2018, in Washington, DC.
“At Glyndon Elementary, to meet the needs of our students, we have chosen for several years to focus on restorative practices and positive behavior," said Tracy Robinson, principal of Glyndon Elementary. “This includes strengthening relationships among students and staff and increasing our use of virtuous language. In recent years, especially, we have worked to empower students to take the lead in these efforts. We strive for our students to decipher, without direction from an adult, how to intrinsically demonstrate teamwork and gifts of character. Isn’t that what we are preparing them for when they become adults?"
Robinson added, “Student achievement is demonstrated because our students can be more focused, more positive, and work more collaboratively. I want to give special thanks to our school counselor, Ashley Hofferbert, our special educator, Robyn Wolf, consultant Dara Feldman and of course, our entire Glyndon Community for providing so much support in our character education efforts."
“We are honored to receive this recognition,” said Lisa Dingle, principal of Warren Elementary School. “Our Warren Elementary staff, students, and parents have worked collaboratively to create an environment in which students can thrive both socially and academically. We have established a school house in which respect, helpfulness, and excellence are pillars of the school community.”
Dingle noted that the school develops character through the use of Virtues Language and Restorative Practices. “With our guidance counselor serving as the lead facilitator in these efforts,” Dingle said, “our students are better able to solve problems through the use of peer mediation, class meetings, and restorative conversations. The use of the Virtues Language has supported students and staff in effectively communicating in a manner that works towards resolving conflicts and affirming positive attributes in each other. These initiatives have helped to improve our sense of community, while holding us accountable for the decisions and choices we make, the words we use, and how they impact others. I appreciate the support of Pat Goldys, principal of Norwood Elementary, and Dara Feldman, consultant, as we continue to grow in our efforts.”

Carver Center one of only 17 schools in nation to earn Arts Schools Network Exemplary School Designation
Towson, MD – George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology is one of only 17 schools in the nation to receive an Exemplary School designation from the Arts Schools Network. The five-year designation is awarded for 2018-2023.
Carver Center has been an ASN Exemplary Art School continuously since 2014.
“This is tremendous recognition of what takes place at Carver Center every day – for and with our students,” said Principal Karen E. H. Steele. “Our mission and vision involves providing opportunities for our students to actualize their dreams so that after graduation they are courageous citizens who are able change the world. This recognition from Arts Schools Network celebrates the energy, effort, creativity, and commitment of an entire community – faculty, staff, families, partners – to support our students in creating that reality.”
Founded in 1993, Carver Center is a countywide magnet school that supports and engages students in acting, business, carpentry, cosmetology, culinary arts, dance, design and production, literary arts, music, or visual arts – as well as a rigorous college-preparatory academic curriculum.
Melissa Brookes, ASN managing director, said, “We offer guidance, inspiration and incentives to arts school leaders who strive for excellence in their schools. When they demonstrate outstanding efforts toward this goal, as they do by following A Guide to Assessing Your Arts School, we recognize and reward their achievements with this designation.”
Carver Center and the other Exemplary Schools will be honored at the ASN 2018 Annual Conference, Oct. 23-26, in Orange County, California.

And the haiku just keep coming! Announcing a book of our 200+ favorites
Towson, MD – Baltimore County students love reading. And they love writing about reading. And we love reading what they write about reading. And that is how it came to be that the judges of Baltimore County Public Schools’ second annual haiku contest chose 233 haiku to be published in the forthcoming book How Reading Makes Me Feel.“In year one of our haiku contest, we were astounded to receive more than 1,650 entries,” said Interim Superintendent Verletta White. “This year, as we topped out at 1,885 entries from 91 schools, we realized that have tapped into some important values for this school system. Team BCPS cares deeply about reading and writing. My deepest appreciation to our teachers who have embraced this contest as a learning opportunity and to all of our talented student writers who impress us with their intellect, creativity, and vocabularies.”
The limited-run book, How Reading Makes Me Feel, will be distributed before the last day of school to every student whose haiku or artwork is included in the book and to every BCPS school library. The haiku in the book represent students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 from 58 schools, and the book is illustrated with artwork by 19 student artists or groups.
In addition to receiving a copy of the book, all of the featured elementary school students will receive a special notepad, and all of the featured middle and high school students will receive gift certificates from Ukazoo Books, courtesy of the store.
The haiku featured in the book were judged blindly, meaning that entries were first organized by school level—elementary, middle, and high. Then, student, teacher, and school names were removed before judges reviewed them.
The judging panel included staff members from the Office of English Language Arts and the Department of Communications and Community Outreach, in addition to four award-winning student poets: Bella Finkel of Towson High School, Ashley Hajimirsadeghi and Joseph Reisberg of George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology, and Cassie Li of Perry Hall High School.
After a lengthy debate, a panel of judges selected just three winners to announce on International Haiku Poetry Day, April 17. Those winners – Maximilian Murray, Grade 5, Pinewood Elementary School; Tegan Hakim, Grade 6, Pikesville Middle School; and Jessica Bartel, Grade 10, Catonsville High School – received the following prizes: four tickets to a Baltimore Orioles game, a $25 gift card from Ukazoo Books, a copy of 102 Haiku Journal from Haiku Guys and Gals, and selected poetry/writing books from The Ivy Bookshop.
Bartel’s English teacher, Marie Thraikill of Catonsville High School, holds the unique distinction of being the English teacher with the most students represented in this haiku book. Her 22 students featured in the book represent almost 10 percent of the total.
