TOWSON, MD—Five grand champions and 15 finalists have emerged as winners of the countywide 2013 M&T Bank 24 Challenge® , held Saturday, March 9, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Timonium. The champions were chosen from among nearly 250 of Baltimore County’s top “mathletes” in grades 5-8 who participated in the prestigious mathematics tournament, which is sponsored by M&T Bank in Baltimore County. According to Cynthia Anderson of Suntex International, Inc., creators of the 24 game, more than 31,000 Baltimore County students trained for local and countywide 24 Challenge competitions this school year by correctly answering 47,304,499 math questions online. The 24 game is designed to improve skills in mental computation, pattern recognition, and deductive reasoning. Using special flash cards, students must use combinations of four numbers presented on each card to create an equation that equals 24. The challenge is to determine what combination of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and/or division of single or double whole numbers or integers will yield that solution. “M&T Bank supports the 24 Challenge as part of our commitment to education in our communities. We believe a good education is a key to your future success and we are dedicated to supporting that,” said Michelle Denoncourt, M&T Bank’s retail regional manager. “Strong math and reasoning skills are very important in the workplace today. Jobs in technology, research and science -- even banking -- all require employees to use deductive reasoning and problem solving- skills.” In addition to M&T’s support, a grant from the National Security Agency’s Mathematics Education Partnership Program covers some of the costs. At the tournament, students sitting in groups of four, along with adult “spotters” and judges, displayed lightning-fast reflexes to rattle off complex mathematical equations with ease. They were cheered by BCPS and M&T officials, parents, and teachers in the crowded ballroom. Grand champions in two elementary and three middle school divisions of play were each awarded a $350 prize to invest in their education. TOWSON, MD. – Parkville High School photography teacher Ryan Twentey is one of two national winners of the prestigious ASCD 2013 Outstanding Young Educator Award (OYEA). The award was announced Sunday at the association’s 68th Annual Conference in Chicago. During his 12 years at Parkville High School, Twentey has worked on systemwide curriculum projects and served as the school’s Career and Technology Education chair, driving an effort to define skills that make students successful in their chosen fields post-graduation. Drawing from these experiences, Twentey produces his own tailored course tutorials that help students learn instructional material at their own pace. “In today’s world, teachers must draw clear correlations between work in the classroom and work in the real world,” said S. Dallas Dance, superintendent of Baltimore County Public Schools. “Ryan shapes his instruction to provide students with the skills necessary to be college and career ready. He’s more than deserving of this impressive award.” As an Advanced Placement (AP) teacher, Twentey works closely with the Community College of Baltimore County to ensure BCPS students are prepared for portfolio reviews that allow them to earn college credit for their high school art classes. As a result, his photography and multimedia students achieve a 100 percent pass rate for AP tests. “I am unbelievably honored and appreciative to receive this award and humbled to be recognized for what I enjoy most about teaching: empowering my students with skills to succeed,” Twentey said. “I build relationships with my students to create an environment of support so that through our experiences and triumphs we all develop, progress and master knowledge, techniques and communication that help us conquer ourchallenges.” The OYEA award recognizes creative and committed teachers and administrators under the age of 40 who are making a difference in children’s lives. Winners receive a $10,000 cash award, membership in ASCD and networking and professional development opportunities. Twentey was given the award alongside Tacoma Public Schools Deputy Superintendent Joshua Garcia. "Both of the educators selected for the award this year make incredible contributions to their school systems and their local communities," said Dr. Gene R. Carter, executive director and CEO of ASCD. "Josh and Ryan shine as examples of how an educator’s commitment to student success can produce results not only for students but for the entire school district. On behalf of ASCD, I congratulate both winners of the 2013 OYEA award and wish them long and rich careers.” Formerly the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, ASCD is an international education association that provides programs, products and services to empower educators to support student success.
