Time to spell c-o-m-p-e-t-i-t-i-v-e-l-y at the 8th annual Baltimore Bee Fourteen Baltimore County Public Schools students from seven schools will participate in the 8th Annual Baltimore Spelling Bee, to be held on Saturday, March 16, at Towson University’s Stephens Hall at 8000 York Road in Towson from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is free to everyone. The approximately 60 participants in the Baltimore Bee are students from Baltimore City and Baltimore County public, private and parochial schools who have won spelling bees at their schools. The winner of the Baltimore Bee will represent the Baltimore area in the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee to be held May 28–30 in Washington, D.C. Contact: www.baltimorebee.orgMaryland Mathcounts competition gets underway at Johns Hopkins University Teams from Franklin, Hereford, Pikesville, and Perry Hall middle schools and four individual students from Ridgely and Sudbrook Magnet middle schools have qualified to compete in the Maryland State MATHCOUNTS Competition to take place on Saturday, March 16, at the Johns Hopkins University Homewood Campus. Mathcounts is a national enrichment club and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement. Now in its 30th year, Mathcounts competitions have written and oral rounds, as well as individual and team components. Information: http://mathcounts.org/mdElementary, middle school students exhibit artwork at The Walters Art Museum In celebration of National Youth Art Month, students from 78 Baltimore County Public Schools elementary and middle schools are exhibiting more than 400 pieces of artwork at The Walters Art Museum, 600 N. Charles Street in Baltimore City, through Sunday, April 7. The featured artwork showcases students’ mastery of art techniques in a variety of media. The museum will host an exhibition reception on Sunday, March 24, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., when student artists will receive certificates for their contributions to the exhibition and an opportunity to participate in studio activities. Baltimore County PTA to hold its Reflections ceremony on Sunday, March 18 The annual Reflections Awards Recognition ceremony, sponsored by the PTA Council of Baltimore County, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 17, at Cockeysville Middle School, 10401 Greenside Drive in Cockeysville. All Baltimore County PTA Award of Excellence and Award of Merit recipients as well as local PTA/PTSA Reflections coordinators will be formally recognized during this award ceremony. Since 1969, the PTA Reflections Program has challenged students to create art inspired by a specific theme. The theme selected for 2012-2013 was "The Magic of a Moment." Milford Mill Academy to celebrate renovation, addition with ribbon-cutting Baltimore County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. S. Dallas Dance will be joined by Baltimore County and state dignitaries at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 18, as they cut the ribbon signifying the completion of a renovation and addition project at Milford Mill Academy. Dr. Dance and Principal Roderick W. Harden, Sr., will lead the ribbon-cutting celebration, which will include student performances and tours of the renovated areas of the building. The project includes a new 4,800-foot addition including a new gymnasium and renovations to the school’s cosmetology lab, carpentry and other technology labs, media center, auditorium, black box theater and general purpose classrooms. In addition, the existing building was reconstructed with new heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, technology and other improvements. New classrooms and storage areas have been added to improve the school’s capacity and comfort and to extend the life of the school. Ridge Ruxton School students take a “trip” to Israel Students at Ridge Ruxton School, 6916 Charles Street in Towson, will celebrate Multicultural Day at the school on Tuesday, March 19, with a imaginative journey to Israel. The trip will include a “jet airplane ride” to Israel, a virtual visit to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, food tasting, and dancing the Hora, as well as the making of crafts from the region. This event will be held in the auditorium from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and also from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Contact: Karen West or Ed Bennett, Ridge Ruxton School, 410.887.3594. Free Respite and Resources Fair to be held for families of children with special needs Battle Monument School will host a Respite and Resources Day from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, for families of its students and other Baltimore area families of children with special needs. More than 20 organizations will share materials about their programs, including applications for services. Attendees are invited to visit each display to obtain detailed information regarding respite care, daycare, future planning, home assistance, recreational programs, workshops and parent support networks/programs. Many services will have information about adaptive equipment, specialized communication, in-home services, as well as enrichment and support services. Battle Monument School is located at 7801 E. Contact: Jerry Easterly, Battle Monument School, 410.887.7000 Japanese students and teachers from sister-state of Kanagawa to spend week visiting Catonsville High School From Tuesday, March 19, through Tuesday, March 26, 22 students and adults from Kanagawa, Japan, will visit Catonsville High School for a weeklong cultural visit. The visiting students will spend two days in classes at Catonsville High, followed by day trips to area locations including the Maryland General Assembly in Annapolis, the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C., and Catonsville elementary and middle schools. The delegation will be hosted by several families in the Catonsville community. Catonsville High School is located at 421 Bloomsbury Avenue in Catonsville. Contact: Beverly Hickman, Catonsville High School, 410.887.0808 Mars Estates Elementary School to hold Math/Reading Night at Food Lion store This year, Mars Estates Elementary School will hold its Math/Reading Night from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, at the Food Lion grocery store located at 1565 Hyde Park Road and Back River Neck Road in Essex. The school’s primary students will have the opportunity to complete tasks involving shapes, colors, and numbers using items in the grocery aisles. They will also be working on things involving measurements and “greater than” and “less than” skills. Intermediate students will work to complete tasks using multiplication and counting money. Contact: Erin Johnson, Mars Estates Elementary School, 410.887.0154 Reading Night to take place at Orems Elementary School This year’s reading night theme at Orems Elementary School will be “Snuggle Up with a Good Book,” and students and their families are invited to wear pajamas from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, as they enjoy cookies and milk or juice and spend the evening reading. Students are asked to bring a blanket and a few good books. The school is located at 711 Highvilla Road in Middle River. Because the school system is committed to accessible communication with its stakeholders, Board of Education meetings are live-streamed and may be viewed on the BCPS website (www.bcps.org). Riderwood Elementary School welcomes author for a visit Riderwood Elementary School will host Kathy Miller, author of the “Chippy Chipmunk” book series, to spend the day with the students on Wednesday, March 20, at the school at 1711 Landrake Road in Towson. Miller will bring Chippy with her, in mascot form, to help promote reading and writing along with making backyard nature accessible and fun. Contact: Tricia Lige, Riderwood Elementary School, 410.887.3568 Southwest Area Advisory Council hosts discussion on school transportation The BCPS Southwest Area Advisory Council will host a presentation on “Transportation: Safe driving, student safety, bus privileges and bus routes” at Maiden Choice School from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20. Jim Mitcherling, director of the BCPS Office of Transportation, will discuss the operations of the school system’s 800+ bus and transportation system. The discussion will include a question-and-answer session. The school is located at 4901 Shelbourne Road in Arbutus. BCPS Superintendent to announce key initiatives at State of the Schools Luncheon BCPS Superintendent Dr. Dallas Dance will announce key long-term initiatives for Baltimore County Public Schools at the system’s inaugural State of the Schools Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. at the Valley Mansion, 594 Cranbrook Road in Cockeysville. Dr. Dance will deliver the event’s keynote address, outlining new visionary goals for the system and touching on the forthcoming strategic plan Blueprint 2.0. The event will also feature student performances, art displays and speeches by three BCPS high school students. State of the Schools is hosted by the BCPS Education Foundation in conjunction with Pearson, the presenting sponsor, and other business sponsors. Contact: Pam Gorsuch or Dolores Pierorazio, Office of Communications, 410.887.7801 or 410.887.5908Loch Raven Model Congress to give students from 14 Baltimore County schools an opportunity to be Congressional representatives for a day More than 140 students from 13 Baltimore County high schools will gather for the 14th Annual Loch Raven Model Congress at Cockeysville Middle School from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 21.The Model Congress allows Gifted and Talented grade 9 students the opportunity to simulate the United States Congress. During the day, students will discuss contemporary issues, interact with other students through speech and debate, and discuss legislation to solve the nation's problems. Delegates spend the entire day in committee and full sessions debating their written bills on a variety of topics including: science and technology, national security, foreign relations, education, public works, health and human services, judiciary, housing and urban affairs, and much more. Contact: Jodi Gratman, Loch Raven High School, 410.887.3525 Art takes center stage at Pleasant Plains Elementary School During the month of March, the artwork of students at Pleasant Plains Elementary School will be on display at the Parkville branch of the Baltimore County Public Library at 9509 Harford Road in Parkville. All grade levels will be represented in the display. Kindergarten artwork will feature still-life paintings influenced by Henri Matisse, and primary grade students are displaying paintings that represent a “beautiful place.” Students in grades 3 and 4 used text and images to create “Postcards from Paradise,” and fifth-graders used warm and cool colors to create still-life paintings. To celebrate and honor the artists, the school will host an “Art Show Open House” on Thursday March 21, from 6 p.m. to 7p.m. at the library branch. Light refreshments will be served. BCPS to sponsor 2010 Special Education Recruitment Fair on Friday, March 22 Baltimore County Public Schools will hold its 2013 Special Education Recruitment Fair from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, March 22, at the Holiday Inn at 9615 Deereco Road in Timonium. The school system is recruiting to fill positions for the 2013-14 school year, including positions for speech pathologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing, sign language interpreters, and other special education teachers. There is no admission fee, and registration will take place at the door. The event will feature information booths and on-site interviews and relocation and benefits information. Job applications will be accepted, and applications may be found on the BCPS web site at www.bcps.org. Charles Street in Towson, will host a “Generations Day” from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Students are invited to bring parents, grandparents, and other relatives to the school to learn about how their school today is different from and similar to schools from generations past. In addition, the BCPS Parentmobile, a rolling, retrofitted school bus featuring educational resources for families, will be on hand.
