TOWSON, MD. – Baltimore County public elementary schools won three of the five team divisions at the 2013 Maryland State Elementary School Championships held March 9, 2013 at Dumbarton Middle School in Rodgers Forge.
Sponsored by the Maryland Chess Association, the tournament attracted more than 87 teams from around the state to compete in five tournament divisions. Based on player ranking, teams were assigned to varsity and junior varsity divisions for elementary school (K-5) and primary school (K-3) students, as well as an elementary school novice division.
Teams from Essex Elementary School took home the top prizes in the elementary school junior varsity category and elementary school novice category, while a team from Cromwell Valley Elementary Regional Magnet School won the primary school junior varsity category. Sparks Elementary School student Bodie Breza took home the top prize in the individual elementary school novice division.
“Chess offers these kids so many benefits in terms of helping them become better students and better thinkers,” said Robert Gray, fourth-grade teacher and Chess Club coach at Essex Elementary School. “The kids had a great time competing and observing other teams. Winning was a bonus.”
