TOWSON, MD. – A new episode of “BCPS News,” which spotlights Baltimore County Public Schools’ achievements and progress, is on the air through Sunday, June 2. The show is hosted by Mary Beth Marsden, a local Emmy Award®-winning broadcaster. Produced twice monthly during the school year by BCPS-TV, “BCPS News” airs daily at 12:30 a.m., 5:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 9:30 p.m., and 10:00 p.m. on Comcast Cable Channel 73 and Verizon FiOS Channel 34 in Baltimore County. Additionally, the program is available online at www.bcps.org/news/ed_channel and http://www.youtube.com/user/BaltCoPS. The latest 15-minute episode includes stories about:
  • Internship opportunities available at BCPS-TV for both high school and college students interested in television and communications.
  • Students featured in the school system’s STAR Video series (Spotlighting Talent Achievement & Results) reflecting on their BCPS education as well as their future academic and work world careers.
  • A visit to a “paperless” classroom at Loch Raven Technical Academy, where students use tablets rather than the typical paper and pencil.
In addition, an “Around the County” segment features a look at a BCPS competition called Project L.i.V.E. that challenges students to design, program, and create educational video game software. The segment also visits Catonsville Middle School where Towson University teacher interns showed off their talents, skills and strengths at the first ever “Intern Showcase.” A segment called “What’s Trending” highlights recent county-wide achievements and events, including the naming of Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts English teacher Sean McComb as 2013-14 BCPS Teacher of the Year; the school system’s annual 1,000-hour Volunteer Tea to honor 60 dedicated BCPS volunteers; and an exhibit of 350 works of art created by Baltimore County students on display at The Baltimore Museum of Art. Since 1983, the school system’s television station has produced original and instructional programming, interactive DVDs, commercial satellite downlinks and live telecasts to serve the informational needs of students, parents, educators and citizens of Baltimore County. BCPS-TV also provides opportunities for BCPS students, staff and stakeholders to learn about and gain experience in television and video production. BCPS-TV student interns for this school year are seniors Abby Kousouris of Hereford High School, Khalida Volou of Chesapeake High School and Erin Tyszko of Perry Hall High School. Other original programs airing on BCPS-TV include “High School Sports Scene,” “Math Homework Helpers,” “SAT Review,” “Student Art Break,” “Student Production Showcase,” “Up Beat” and “The Chalkboard.” The Education Channel also records and airs system-wide music and recognition events, as well as recorded and live-stream broadcasts of the public meetings of the Baltimore County Board of Education.
