TEAM BCPS Day 2018
Video
TOWSON, MD — The concept was simple: one day each year, Baltimore County Public Schools would ask everyone to share photos on social media (using #BCPSblue) in which they wear blue to show their pride in the school system. That is how Team BCPS Day began, but, oh my, what it’s grown into! We can’t wait to see what will happen on Team BCPS Day 2018 – Thursday, Jan. 11. We can’t wait to see what our Team BCPS stakeholders will make happen! In the past, businesses have taken photos that show their entire workforce on the floor in the shape of the letters BCPS. Photos have been taken using drones and green screens. Schools have created music videos to celebrate the day and have gathered their entire student body and faculty together for photo shoots. BCPS has received photos of future (as yet unborn) students and from alumni now on the other side of the nation and world. The county has lit the dome of its courthouse in blue. Blue cakes have been baked. Hair has been dyed blue. Some photos have come along with messages about generations of a family are connected to BCPS. “Team BCPS Day is one of my favorite days of the year,” said Interim Superintendent Verletta White. “It is an outstanding opportunity to celebrate our unity and to recognize the reach of our school system and our relationships with and impact on individuals, businesses, and neighborhoods. January 11, 2018, will be my first Team BCPS Day as interim superintendent so I am hoping that it will be the biggest and best one ever. You – our students, staff, alumni, and community partners – can make that happen." Prior to Team BCPS Day, alumni and business partners are invited to submit written or video messages about how and why they are part of BCPS. These messages can be sent to communications@bcps.org any time on or before Jan. 11, or shared via social media. Photos from last year’s Team BCPS Day can be viewed on the school system’s Flickr page.

TOWSON, MD. – The newest episode of “Parent University,” now broadcasting on BCPS-TV and available online, explores literacy from a variety of angles. The episode features a visit to Pikesville High School where Erin Haroth, English department chair, explains what authentic literacy means and how the school is reinforcing it through classroom instruction in all subject areas. A Grade 11 student, Astrid, discusses how the instruction is now more interactive and impactful. Megan Thomas, special education chair, talks about the importance of reading assignments that are relevant to students. And library media specialist Jennifer Meltzer explains the role of the school library in supporting student research and nurturing students’ love of reading. The show’s next stop is Deep Creek Middle School where several staff members and a student share their varied personal literacy journeys and describe the books that helped them become avid readers. The school is represented by Faith, a Grade 8 student; Lisa Bell, English department chair; Alyssa Prudente, a social studies teacher; Meredith Rolka, assistant principal; and Luke Sinkler, behavioral interventionist. Finally the show highlights some of the many “non-book” resources offered by Baltimore County Public Library branches. Jessica Woods, librarian III at the BCPS North Point Branch, introduces readalong books (that come with CDs or cassettes), “box” books (with integrated audio), playaways (audio books), launch pads (tablets that link to BCPL databases), and Chromebooks – all of which can be checked out from local branches. The Parent University show is hosted by Sue Hahn, a program specialist in the BCPS Office of Family and Community Engagement. Now in its fourth season, “Parent University” provides educational content for parents and caregivers as well as fun and family-oriented field trips and events available in the greater Baltimore County area. The show is one facet of the larger Parent University, which offers in-person workshops throughout the community as well as online resources and videos to meet the unique needs of families with school-age children. BCPS-TV, the school system’s television station, produces a new episode of “Parent University" roughly every two weeks during the school year. The show is available online and may be viewed at 5 a.m. and 7 p.m. daily, and 12:00 p.m. each day except Sunday. BCPS-TV may be found on Comcast Cable Channel 73 and Verizon FiOS Channel 34 in Baltimore County.
